Rep Chip Baltimore (R-Boone), who represents Greene County in the Iowa House, spoke with the Greene County board of education at the board’s regular meeting Jan. 21.
Although the budget process has just started, Baltimore talked about the legislature’s commitment to education and the challenge of meeting the required deadline for setting school funding levels.
He also assured the board the legislature is committed to sustaining the Teacher Leadership program initiated during last year’s session. Greene County received $404,000 this year to enhance teachers’ skills. The program will be fully implemented over the next three years at a projected cost of $150 million a year.
“We do care about educating our children in Iowa. It is a priority,” Baltimore said. “We may have some really nasty philosophical battles about how to do it, but from everybody’s perspective, and I don’t care where you’re at on the political spectrum, everybody down there (at the capitol) cares about the children and cares that they get the best education they can.”
Other topics included the school calendar, bullying, and rural economic development. For the complete story, visit the Opinion tab at GreeneCountyNewsOnline.
